Background:

Ready for School, Ready for Life (Ready Ready) is a collaborative effort to build a connected, innovative system of care for Guilford County’s youngest children and their families. Our focus is ensuring all children in Guilford County and their families get the resources they need for healthy development. We want every child born in Guilford County from 2022 and beyond to enter kindergarten developmentally on track in five key areas:

Physical
Language and communication
Social-emotional
Cognitive
Approaches to play and learning

Family voice informs our work, and we share our learning with residents and community stakeholders. We also work with more than 100 community partners in Guilford County and North Carolina to create this system of care. As a backbone organization, our goal is population-level change.

Position Summary:

The Controller oversees the recording of all financial transactions to ensure accurate quantitative and timely information on Ready for School, Ready for Life’s financial position, liquidity and cash flow capability and project fund reporting. Ensures company compliance with all tax regulations, non-profit fund reporting requirements, and government and other grant reporting responsibilities. This position reports to the Vice President of Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the Mission, Values and Principles of Ready Ready
  • Advance the implementation of the Ready Ready Equity Action Plan Deposits/Accounts Receivable
  • Maintain and record daily/weekly deposits
  • Track grants and collaborate with Grants Manager on reporting
  • Incorporate the organization’s Values and Principles into the work
  • Agree with the organization’s Equity Statement and support the implementation of the Equity Action Plan

Payroll

  • Verify, prepare and record payroll and benefit transactions

Cash Management

  • Assist in timely Cash Management between accounts (transfers, releases, etc.)

Fixed Assets

  • Maintain fixed asset list and prepare and record accumulated depreciation

Monthly Close

  • Track all expenses to grants and provide reports to staff as needed Ensure timely invoicing of funders
  • Manage and prepare all accounting transactions to ensure GAAP, FASB and Non-Profit compliance and substantiates with supporting documentation
  • Prepare and post journal entries as assigned by the Board Treasurer. Perform month-end and year-end closing activities

Reporting

  • Generate monthly financial reports for review by the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors Prepare other reports as requested
  • Set up and maintain grant tracking and reporting of revenues and expenses
  • Serve as a resource to Ready Ready staff on accounting issues, procedures, and budgeting timelines. Provide Grants Manager with materials to submit grant applications

Audit and Tax

  • Assist with preparation of annual audit schedules and act as primary point-of-contact for auditor requests
  • Assist in preparation and review of annual tax returns. Assist in annual budget preparation

Other

  • Perform special projects at discretion of the CEO
  • Collaborate with CEO and Board Treasurer to maintain accounting policies and procedures, and set strategic direction for finance goals
  • Assist Board Treasurer in scheduling and facilitating regular Finance Committee meetings. Attend regularly scheduled Board and other committee meetings as needed
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial data and ensure financial security by following internal controls
  • Support and adhere to Accounting Controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures
  • Update professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies

Requirements:

  • BS in Accounting or relevant degree, CPA or CMA a plus
  • Minimum five or more years accounting experience and/or training
  • Strong knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) rules for nonprofits Knowledge of fund accounting principles
  • Knowledge of accounting software; database software; payroll systems Advanced Proficiency with Quickbooks Online, Microsoft Excel, and Word Possess initiative, integrity, attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills
  • Time management, decision making, and analytical problem-solving skills required
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal customers and external customers on telephone
  • Ability to frequently sit, occasionally stand, bend, walk and lift up to 20 lbs. of material

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum three or more years nonprofit accounting experience and/or training.

Hours are typically Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Office located in Greensboro, North Carolina.
